Broad Tariffs to Remain at 10% for All Countries Except China
Broad tariffs of 10% on all imports (excluding items already covered under section 232) went into effect on April 5th and the higher, country-specific tariffs will receive a 90-day pause. U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent said the 10% tariff on imports will remain in place for most countries as they continue trade negotiations.
Over the past two days, the tariff landscape between the U.S. and China has undergone rapid changes.
- On April 8th, the U.S. announced a significant tariff increase on Chinese imports, raising the rate from 34% to 84%.
- In response, China retaliated by announcing an 84% tariff on U.S. goods starting April 10th, up from the previously set 34%.
- The 84% tariff on Chinese imports took effect at midnight on April 9th on top of the 20% tariffs imposed earlier in the year totaling 104% on Chinese goods.
- President Trump announced on social media today that the total amount of tariffs on Chinese goods will be raised to 125%.
We will continue to monitor updates from the White House and U.S. Customs and Border Protection on these changes.
Retaliatory Tariffs
Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) approved plans to impose a 25% tariff on U.S. goods in response to U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs. The EU also issued a 90-day pause to match the U.S. pause to reenter negotiations.
