Federal Register filings have been released as the U.S. administration proceeds with investigations into imports of pharmaceuticals and semiconductors. A section 232 investigation has been initiated to determine whether imported processed critical minerals and derivative products threaten national security. According to the executive order, derivative products include semi-finished goods like semiconductor wafers as well as final products like motors, electric vehicles, batteries, and smartphones.
The Bureau of Industry and Security, within the Department of Commerce, is seeking public comment until May 7th on the impact on pharmaceuticals and semiconductors on national security.
Potential outcomes include new tariffs on sectoral products, import restrictions, and incentives for domestic production.
