Super Typhoon Ragasa Update
Super Typhoon Ragasa, one of the most powerful storms of the year, made landfall Wednesday morning along the coast of Zhuhai in Guangdong Province, bringing extreme winds and heavy rainfall to southern China, including Guangdong, Fujian, and Hong Kong.
As a safety measure, our Hong Kong office, in addition to many schools, businesses, public transportation, and local rail services closed earlier this week.
Port Operations Impact:
All major terminals in Shenzhen and Guangdong, including Yantian (YICT), Shekou (SCT), and Nansha (NICT), have been closed since September 22. These closures have added to existing backlogs caused by earlier weather disruptions, creating a five-day halt in operations at three of China’s largest container ports.
According to official forecasts, ports are expected to gradually resume operations on by September 26. Once reopened, carriers will work to clear congestion, but delays of 5–7 days are expected, and in some cases, vessels may cancel port calls to avoid bunching.
This is also affecting other key ports, including Xiamen, Shanghai, Ningbo, and Qingdao, where heavy rainfall and vessel schedule adjustments are leading to further delays.
Air cargo has also been heavily impacted. Hong Kong International Airport canceled over 100 cargo flights, with services delayed into the weekend. Shenzhen’s Baoan International Airport remains closed until Thursday.
The disruption comes just before China’s National Day holiday (Oct. 1), when factories shut down for up to 10 days. Even after reopening, recovery of shipping and flight schedules are expected to take time.
